Lost certification card - now what?
First things first: your certification is not gone. It sits in your training agency’s database, and the card is only the proof. Losing it is a paperwork problem, not a training problem.
If you are on holiday right now
- Open your agency app. PADI, SSI, CMAS and the national federations keep certifications digitally. If you have your login, the card is on your phone in two minutes.
- Look for an old photo. Most people photographed the card at some point - in the camera roll, in an old chat, in an email to a centre.
- Talk to the centre. Many can verify a certification through their agency access. They need your full name, date of birth and ideally the certification number.
- Show your logbook. It does not replace a card, but it helps a centre judge your experience - which matters when they have to decide whether to take you.
Without any proof, a centre cannot take you as a certified diver - their insurance is on the line. What is usually possible: a guided dive or a short check dive. Ask for that instead of arguing.
Ordering a replacement card
All major agencies issue replacement cards, usually for a fee and with processing time. You will normally need your name, date of birth, ideally the certification number and the centre where you trained. Your agency's website explains where to apply; the centre that certified you can often help directly, because they hold the training records.
A practical tip: order the digital version at the same time if there is one. Then the next time you lose something, it is only plastic.
So it does not happen again
- Photograph it immediately when a new card arrives - front and back.
- Keep it where your medical and insurance are. Three proofs in three places is three chances to forget one.
- Not only in your camera roll. Experience says that is the least reliable place at the next phone change.
This is exactly why Diver ID exists: one profile holding certifications from any agency, medical certificates and insurance together - and a centre gets what it needs directly at check-in. Free for divers.
Frequently asked questions
Is my certification lost if the card is gone?
No. Your agency has the certification on record; the card is only the proof. You can order a replacement or use the digital version.
Can I dive without my certification card?
As a certified diver without any proof, usually not - the centre would be risking its insurance. A guided dive or a short check dive is normally possible. Raise it before you book.
How quickly do I get a replacement card?
It depends on the agency: the digital card is often available immediately, a printed replacement takes days to weeks and costs a fee.
What do I need to apply?
Usually name, date of birth, ideally the certification number and the centre where you trained. That centre can often help directly.
