Fitness to dive and the medical certificate

Nothing holds people up at the dive desk as often as this - and usually not because somebody is unfit to dive, but because the certificate has expired or stayed at home.

When you need a certificate

In many countries you can dive recreationally without a certificate as long as the questionnaire is clear. That does not make it a bad idea: an examination every few years is the only way to find something you would not notice yourself.

What is examined

A dive medical looks at the organs that pressure affects: ears and sinuses, lungs, heart and circulation. Add a conversation about previous illnesses and medication and, depending on the doctor, an exercise test or a lung function check. Having it done by a doctor with dive medicine experience gives you the more useful assessment - a GP without that background will tend to be either too cautious or too generous.

Typical validity

A certificate is usually valid for one to three years, often shorter for teenagers and for older divers. The exact date is on the certificate - and that date is what counts, not the rule of thumb.

The real mistake: the expiry date

A certificate that expired on the first day of your holiday is as good as none. It happens more often than you would think, because nobody keeps a date three years away in their head. If your certificate is stored digitally, you get a reminder beforehand - Diver ID flags it in good time before your medical or your insurance runs out. That is what an expiry date in a profile is good for and a sheet of paper is not.

When something comes up

A "yes" on the questionnaire does not mean you cannot dive. It means a doctor looks at it and decides. Very many items turn out to be unproblematic once clarified, some come with conditions, a few do not. The centre at the desk neither may nor should make that call - they are not doctors and are not liable for a medical judgement.

What matters is that you answer honestly. The questionnaire is not the hurdle; it is the reason someone underwater has an accurate picture of you.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a dive medical certificate valid?

Usually one to three years, often shorter for teenagers and older divers. The date on the certificate itself is what counts.

Do I need a certificate to dive on holiday?

Not everywhere. In many countries a clear medical questionnaire is enough. You need a certificate as soon as an item is answered with yes, or when the centre requires one regardless.

Who can carry out the examination?

In principle any doctor, but a doctor with dive medicine experience gives you a far more useful assessment.

What if my certificate expires during my holiday?

You will need a fresh assessment locally, which costs days. That is why it pays to store the expiry date digitally and be reminded beforehand.
