Proving your nitrox certification

Nitrox is where arguments happen most often: the guest did the course years ago, the card is at home, and the centre still will not hand over a tank. There is a good reason for that.

Why the centre insists

Nitrox is not a comfort gas, it is a different mix with a hazard of its own: beyond a certain depth the oxygen fraction becomes toxic. Anyone breathing nitrox has to know the maximum operating depth for their mix, analyse the tank themselves and record the result. That is what the course teaches - and why the certification proves somebody knows what they are doing.

Then there is liability: if a centre hands nitrox to someone without proof and something happens, it stands alone. That is why even friendly centres hold the line here.

What actually happens at the desk

Before the first tank a centre wants three things: your proof, your signature on the analysis and usually an entry in the fill log. That takes two minutes - if the proof is there. Otherwise it takes half a day of your holiday.

When the card is missing

  1. Agency app. PADI, SSI, CMAS and national federations hold the certification digitally - usually the in-app view is enough.
  2. An old photo. A legible picture of the card is accepted almost everywhere.
  3. Logbook. It does not replace the certification but helps when a centre is looking for a way to say yes.
  4. Course on site. A nitrox course takes about a day at most centres - annoying, but workable.

The problem behind the problem

Nitrox is almost never a first certification. It comes later, often with a different agency than the entry-level course, and therefore ends up in a different app or a different drawer. Divers who keep every certification in one place - regardless of agency - simply do not have this problem. In Diver ID you store each certification as a photo or PDF, and the centre sees what you hold at check-in without you having to search.

One practical note on your medical

People who dive nitrox often dive longer and deeper too. While you are at it, check whether your dive medical certificate is still valid - that is the second point where holidays regularly stall at the desk.

Frequently asked questions

Why will nobody give me nitrox without proof?

Because nitrox carries its own hazard: beyond a certain depth the oxygen fraction becomes toxic. The certification proves you can calculate the operating depth and analyse the tank - without it, the centre carries the risk alone.

Is a photo of my nitrox card enough?

Usually yes, as long as name, agency and number are legible. The view in your agency’s app is accepted almost everywhere too.

Do I have to analyse the tank myself?

At most centres yes - and the result is recorded with your signature. That is part of what the nitrox course practises.
