Scuba diving with children

The question comes up on every family holiday: can my child come along? The answer rests on three things - age, the health check and the parents’ signature. All three are more clearly regulated than people assume.

Age

Every training agency sets its own minimum ages, and they differ by programme: there are shallow-water taster options for younger children and junior certifications from a higher age. What binds you is the rule of the agency running the course - ask the centre directly rather than relying on a number from the internet, because it changes by programme and by country.

Tied to age come depth limits and supervision rules: young divers stay shallower than adults and dive with a professional or a certified adult. Those limits grow with age, not with skill.

The better yardstick

Age is a number; maturity is not. A child has to stay calm in an unfamiliar situation, follow an instruction and say when something is wrong. A good centre looks at that more closely than at the birthday.

The health check

Children fill in the same questionnaire as adults, and the usual items come up more often here: asthma, frequent middle-ear infections, trouble equalising. A "yes" is not a ban but a request for medical clarification - and for children, that is best done by somebody with dive medicine experience.

What parents sign

In practice: a parent has to be reachable at check-in. If dad takes the child diving while mum stays on the beach, that is exactly the delay nobody planned for. In Diver ID you store up to two legal guardians in a child's profile; every document then asks for both signatures - and on their eighteenth birthday it ends automatically.

Three things that save the day

  1. Call ahead. Not every centre takes children, and the programmes vary widely.
  2. Check the gear. Children's wetsuits and small cylinders are not stocked everywhere.
  3. Do not push. A child who does not want to go should not be in the water - the holiday lasts longer than this one morning.

Frequently asked questions

From what age can children scuba dive?

Each training agency sets this and it varies by programme - there are shallow-water options for younger children and junior certifications from a higher age. Ask the centre for the rule that binds them.

How deep can a child dive?

Young divers stay shallower than adults and dive supervised; the limits rise with age. The exact figures are set by the agency the dive runs under.

What do parents have to sign?

Risk acknowledgement, liability release and the medical questionnaire - minors cannot sign these effectively alone. A legal guardian has to be reachable at check-in.

Does my child need a medical certificate?

As soon as a health item applies - more common in children than in adults - yes. Have it assessed by somebody with dive medicine experience.
